Extroverts Tweet Differently from Introverts in Weibo

Being dominant factors driving the human actions, personalities can be excellent indicators in predicting the offline and online behavior of different individuals. However, because of the great expense and inevitable subjectivity in questionnaires and surveys, it is challenging for conventional studies to explore the connection between personality and behavior and gain insights in the context of large amount individuals. Considering the more and more important role of the online social media in daily communications, we argue that the footprint of massive individuals, like tweets in Weibo, can be the inspiring proxy to infer the personality and further understand its functions in shaping the online human behavior. In this study, a map from self-reports of personalities to online profiles of 293 active users in Weibo is established to train a competent machine learning model, which then successfully identifies over 7,000 users as extroverts or introverts. Systematical comparisons from perspectives of tempo-spatial patterns, online activities, emotion expressions and attitudes to virtual honor surprisingly disclose that the extrovert indeed behaves differently from the introvert in Weibo. Our findings provide solid evidence to justify the methodology of employing machine learning to objectively study personalities of massive individuals and shed lights on applications of probing personalities and corresponding behaviors solely through online profiles.Comment: Datasets of this study can be freely downloaded through: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.4765150.v

Dynamic 3D shape measurement based on the phase-shifting moir\'e algorithm

In order to increase the efficiency of phase retrieval,Wang proposed a high-speed moire phase retrieval method. But it is used only to measure the tiny object. In view of the limitation of Wang method,we proposed a dynamic three-dimensional (3D) measurement based on the phase-shifting moire algorithm.First, four sinusoidal fringe patterns with a pi/2 phase-shift are projected on the reference plane and acquired four deformed fringe patterns of the reference plane in advance. Then only single-shot deformed fringe pattern of the tested object is captured in measurement process.Four moire fringe patterns can be obtained by numerical multiplication between the the AC component of the object pattern and the AC components of the reference patterns respectively. The four low-frequency components corresponding to the moire fringe patterns are calculated by the complex encoding FT (Fourier transform) ,spectrum filtering and inverse FT.Thus the wrapped phase of the object can be determined in the tangent form from the four phase-shifting moire fringe patterns using the four-step phase shifting algorithm. The continuous phase distribution can be obtained by the conventional unwrapping algorithm. Finally, experiments were conducted to prove the validity and feasibility of the proposed method. The results are analyzed and compared with those of Wang method, demonstrating that our method not only can expand the measurement scope, but also can improve accuracy.Comment: 14 pages,5 figures. ams.or

Predicting China's CPI by Scanner Big Data

Scanner big data has potential to construct Consumer Price Index (CPI). This work utilizes the scanner data of supermarket retail sales, which are provided by China Ant Business Alliance (CAA), to construct the Scanner-data Food Consumer Price Index (S-FCPI) in China, and the index reliability is verified by other macro indicators, especially by China's CPI. And not only that, we build multiple machine learning models based on S-FCPI to quantitatively predict the CPI growth rate in months, and qualitatively predict those directions and levels. The prediction models achieve much better performance than the traditional time series models in existing research. This work paves the way to construct and predict price indexes through using scanner big data in China. S-FCPI can not only reflect the changes of goods prices in higher frequency and wider geographic dimension than CPI, but also provide a new perspective for monitoring macroeconomic operation, predicting inflation and understanding other economic issues, which is beneficial supplement to China's CPI
